Unit Four
Checks in Cash and on Collection
B---Bank-clerk; C---Customer
Dialogue 1
B: Good morning, sir. What can I do for you?
C: I’d like to cash this check, please?
B: Do you have an account with us?
C: Yes . Here is my identification card.
B: All right. How would you like it?
C: Ten hundreds and twenty tens and the rest in small change, please.
B: OK, here you are.

Dialogue 2
B: Good afternoon, sir. May I help you?
C: I’d like to cash some traveler’s checks. Can you do that for me?
B: Certainly, madam. Today’s exchange rate is 8.80 yuan RMB for one US dollar. How much would you like to cash?
C: Two hundred. Here are the checks.
B: Would you please fill the checks and countersign them, madam?
C: All right, here you are.
B: Thank you. May I have a look at your passport?
C: Of course. Here is my passport.
B: Sorry you’ve filled a wrong passport number, please refill it.
C: I’m terribly sorry. Is that OK now?
B: That’s all right. Thank you. One moment, please. Sorry I have kept you waiting, ,madam, please sigh here on the memo.
C: All right.
B: Thank you. Here is 1760 yuan RMB. Please have a check and keep the memo.
C: Thank you.
B: It’s my pleasure. Hope you are enjoying your stay in Shanghai. Goodbye.

Dialogue 3
B: May I help you, madam?
C: Yes, please. My son in Seattle sent me this check for 5000 US dollars. I would like to cash it and get RMB for it.
B: I’m sorry, madam, but we cannot cash this check right now.
C: Something wrong with it?
B: Not that, madam. The only reason is that it is a personal check.
C: You mean you don’t handle personal checks?
B: No, I don’t mean that. But we have to send a personal check to the drawee bank for collection. It’s different from a bank check which can be cashed immediately it is presented to us.
C: How long does it take to collect this check?
B: This check is drawn on a bank in Seattle. It will take about fifteen days to clear. We will give you the proceeds as soon as we collect the funds.
C: Then you can pay me in yuan?
B: Yes, we will change the proceeds into RMB for you. We will deduct a collection service charge from the proceeds of course.
C: How much is that?
B: Normally, just a few dozen yuan. We can ask for a cable remittance from Seattle if you would like, then we could cash it for you very quickly but you have to pay the charge for the cable.
C: Oh, please don’t bother, I can wait for the ten days. Will you notify me when you receive the proceeds?
B: Yes, we’ll call you. Will you please endorse the check on the back and show me your passport?
C: Here you are.
B: Yes. And please fill out this Collection Application form.

Dialogue 4
C: Excuse me.
B: OK, What can I do for you?
C: I’d like to cash this check, please.
B: No, I’m afraid you can’t, you see this is a crossed check, not negotiable. That means you can’t cash this check directly.
C: Oh, dear. What should I do with the check then?
B: You should deposit the check into your account first. It’ll secure that only the person to whom the check was paid gets the money.
C: That’s an excellent idea. Are there any other kinds of checks?
B: Yes, there’re two other kinds: open checks and special crossings.
C: Can you explain them to me?
B: Certainly, sir. Open checks are what you can cash over the counter, while special crossing are those with special restriction on the means to get paid.
C: I see. But suppose I want to pay the crossed check into someone else’s account?
B: That’s easy. You just endorse it and then hand it over to someone else for deposit into another account.
C: Good idea, well, we’ve talked a lot about checks, but I haven’t learned how to deposit the check.
B: Don’t worry, let me tell you. Here’s a deposit slip. Please fill it out and sign under signature. The money will be credited to your account when the check is cleared.
C: OK. Name, address, phone number…Here you are. By the way, is it the same procedure if I want to deposit cash?
B: Yes, it is. Would you like me to record this transaction in your passbook?
C: Yes, please. Here’s the passbook.
